Welcome to Isthmus, a New Zealand-based design practice with an international profile in executing award-winning landscape architecture, urban design and landscape planning. We are a design-focused, collaborative and innovative team with offices in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington. Established in 1988, the company is led by the two founding directors with five associates and currently employs over 35 staff.
Our track record of 20 years reflects a solid reputation for reliable delivery and features an outstanding range of award-winning built work . We are committed to design excellence, placemaking and sustainable practices.
What we do
Isthmus work with local government and private sector clients, and collaborate with community and cultural groups and other disciplines to improve the quality and richness of our cities, towns and landscapes.
Isthmus work on projects in a ‘big picture’ context, providing clients with integrated solutions and taking complex projects through to implementation. We have specialist skills and expertise in design planning, urban design, geospatial, landscape ecology, and contract documentation that add value to our core landscape architecture practice. The integration of resource management planning and urban design, interpreted through GIS and 3D modeling capabilities, is a point of difference that defines the practice.
Isthmus lead the best built and designed work in New Zealand , including award winning coastal and waterfront sites, streetscape upgrades, new city parks, major infrastructure projects and masterplanned communities that create a legacy for the future.
How we do it
The qualified and experienced urban designers and landscape architects at Isthmus work in a seamless studio consultancy across three cities nationwide. We create the right team for the right project, drawing on the specialist skills within the practice.
Isthmus has also fostered a culture of collaboration with other professional practices including architecture, engineering and planning to design and implement projects. We lead and facilitate creative and problem solving workshops, and approach each project with enthusiasm and a desire for real improvement.
Good communication with clients and effective consultation with other stakeholders is a key focus of our work. We believe that good public relations must be planned and proactive rather than reactive given the increasing complexity of contemporary urban design and landscape architecture works.
